Jeremy Renner was trying to stop a snowplow from sliding and hitting his nephew when the crash that left him in critical condition happened, according to an incident report from the Nevada Sheriff’s Office.
The redacted report from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office obtained by CNN said the emergency break was not engaged, which would have stopped the snowplow tractor as it began to slide sideways.
“The Pistenbully groomer began to slide, forcing Renner to exit the vehicle without applying the emergency brake,” the report said. “Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would prevent the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or steer the Pistenbully away to avoid injury (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and crushed.

It was also noted in the report that the break light was not working and that “mechanical problems may have been a factor”, but the deficiency is not believed to be a factor.
Renner’s nephew was able to look after him until help arrived on the scene.
The 52-year-old actor was airlifted to a hospital near Reno after a neighbor who happened to be a doctor applied a tourniquet to his leg to stop the bleeding.
Renner was moved to the intensive care unit following surgeries he had to undergo following the incident.
A chilling 911 call captured the moments after the crash, as Renner can be heard in the background moaning in pain. The neighbor who called emergency services said the Marvel star’s breathing was “shallow” and suggested a medical helicopter be dispatched to the scene.
Last week, the two-time Oscar nominee announced he was home from hospital and recovering.

The Marvel actor had been hospitalized since Jan. 1 after he “encountered a weather-related accident while plowing snow” and suffered “serious” injuries in Lake Tahoe.
Renner revealed on Saturday that he broke more than 30 bones in his New Year’s Day snowplow accident.
“Morning workouts, resolutions have all changed this particular new year,” the ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ star wrote in an Instagram post. “Stemming from a tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused on uniting actionable love.”
The caption accompanied a photo of the actor, 52, lying in a hospital bed at home while a medical specialist stretched his leg.
“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and caring for me and my family,” he continued in the post, which quickly garnered a million likes. “Much love and appreciation to all of you. These 30+ broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just as the love and connection with family and friends grows deeper.
“Love and blessings to you all,” he concluded, accompanied by a series of heart and praying hands emojis.
