Netflix rings the bell Cobra Kai: The karate comedy-drama has been renewed for season 6 – which will be its last – the streamer announced on Friday.
Despite what series creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg call “bittersweet” news, they teased a possible continuation of the franchise “down the line.”
“Rediscovering the world at The Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor,” the creators said in a letter written to fans. “It allowed us to play sensei, expand on the original storylines and bring forth a new generation of underdogs. We never took this opportunity for granted.
“Our goal for day 1 with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley when and where we always imagined. While it may be a bittersweet day for the fandom, the Miyagiverse has never been stronger… We hope to tell more The Karate Kid stories with you all the way because, as we all know: Cobra Kai never dies.
In a chat with TVLine in 2021, Schlossberg hinted that a potential spin-off might, in fact, be in the cards.
“Every spin-off or deep-dive swap crosses our minds,” he said at the time. “Everything has to be the right thing, and it has to be the same level of quality as Cobra Kai is. Our minds always think The Karate Kidso that possibility is definitely there.
Cobra Kai began its 10-episode Season 5 on September 9. During this season, Terry Silver’s (Thomas Ian Griffith) plans to expand his Cobra Kai empire came to fruition, as the sensei’s “No Mercy” style of karate began to be taught throughout the Valley. While Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) put karate aside (temporarily) to focus on repairing the damage he caused, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) called on an old friend for help – l former opponent Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto). The series also stars Xolo Maridueña, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, Tanner Buchanan, Peyton List, Courtney Henggeler, Vanessa Rubio, Dallas Dupree Young and Martin Kove.
